Los Angeles, California: The Israeli-American Civic Action Network welcomes the apology from the Republic of Slovakia for World War II laws aimed at stripping Jewish citizens of their basic rights and culminating in their deportations to death camps.
“This year is the 80th anniversary of the adoption of the so-called ‘Jewish Codes’ in Slovakia,” said Marylin Kingston, Ph.D., member of ICAN’s Holocaust Education and Remembrance Advisory Council. “While long overdue, it is a step in the right direction ensuring that the memory of the crimes of the Holocaust are never forgotten and education about that history is forever preserved.”
ICAN’s Holocaust Education and Remembrance Advisory Council, comprised of some of the world’s top experts on preserving Holocaust history, is taking a leading role in leveraging grassroots advocacy with local, state, and national leaders in the United States to combat government-sponsored Holocaust denial and distortion.
“While the United States and its partners are focused on preserving Holocaust history and promoting Holocaust education, governments like the Republic of Lithuania in Europe remain locked in the past and are fraudulently rewriting the history of their Holocaust criminals,” said Dillon Hosier, CEO at ICAN. “The campaign led by the Government of Lithuania to rewrite Holocaust history is the biggest threat to Holocaust education in the United States.”
Holocaust education and remembrance is one of ICAN’s top issues and is working to educate policymakers and other leaders about the dangers of government-sponsored Holocaust denial and distortion, how it promotes and incites antisemitism, and risks putting societies on a trajectory of repeating past crimes against humanity.
